I have this problem where my pc (other staff's pc) keep restarting after login the windows. I tried to run the HijackThis.exe on its own folder as adviced. I have no other browser open. But the application stopped and show 'Can't Quit'. How can anyone, please help me!! It is infected through our network and now 80% of our computers had the same symptom.

As I wrote, i think this is the only computer available that has not infected. Wierd, because i had installed antivirus and anti-spyware every computer and updated it continuously. But it still happened and worsen. Please..

I think this is linked to agntsrvc.exe which I know is a Oracle's file. Because, after I re-login afterward windows will popup this agntsrvc.exe error and I had sent it to the Microsoft to analyze the problem. But I don't know they have came out with a solution.

Therefore, i would like to appreciate in any kind who know the solution to this matter.

Hudz,

Thank you.

I somehow manage to run the HijackThis.exe and log the processes and suddenly the windows automatically shut down. And then, after re-login back, I must attach it to my email because windows again automatically shutdown when i try to open the .log file. Anyway, this is the log captured by HijackThis:

You are infected with a variant of the Brontok worm, which I don't think AVG can deal with yet.
Also, speaking of AVG: you mentioned "other staff's pc". The version of AVG that you are running (AVG Free) is only for personal use; you are violating AVG's terms of use by deploying the program in a business environment.

Sophos indicates that their AV products can deal with the worm; I've also read that the NOD and Avast! antivirus programs can do the same.

Dear DMR,

Thank you for giving me the information. About the violation, I have no intention at all to violate at any purpose, I just don't read the terms and condition. I will register if nessecary or uninstall the software if it is still violating. Thank you for reminding me about the violation.

No worries- I'm not the Software Police or anything like that :mrgreen:
I just like to see a company that puts out a good product get paid for that product when/where applicable.

Were you able to use NOD or Avast! to remove the Brontok infection? I'd be curious to know if either of those utilities actually worked.

The Brontok worm is very confusing. I can't understand the infections. Sometimes the computer shutdown itself, sometimes the computer is very slow as a result of a process B**something.exe running using 50% and above of the CPU process, and when I kill the process, another critical such as crss and smss(I don't know what is it) automatically ran and used mostly of the CPU process.
Norton 2005 detected the worm as well as Avast. But the recommendation of both software is move to chest or quarantine. But, unfortunately, the bad worm :evil: has made the registry corrupt and can't be repaired by just moving the infected file/registry to chest or quarantine. I've tried the Microsoft Windows System restore and restored the infected computer back to where it was without infection, successfully.
As I told you, the worm is still wandering about in the network, but most of the computer didn't have data of system restore before. Therefore, It can't be restored or repair. The worst case, it also can't be repaired by booting the computer using XP bootable CD. The only way is to format the computer. :sad: .But I didn't started yet the format process because it is such an unpleasing thing to do. HELP ME!!.

Thank you,

Post a new HijackThis log and we'll see if we can remove the infection(s) manually from there.

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Can you tell us anything about the proxy server setting in this log entry:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = socks=localhost:1080

and the DNS server IP addresses in this entry:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{77EDD71A-5EDF-42D4-8B14-95D1316B2A2C}: NameServer = 172.16.240.250,172.16.240.251

2. Download and install the following utilities:

CCleaner - www.ccleaner.com
Webroot Spy Sweeper (14 day free trial) - http://www.webroot.com/shoppingcart...4011&vcode=DT02
Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
ewido Anti-malware - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

- Open Spy Sweeper, click on "Options", and then click on "Update Definitions" under the Program Options tab. Do not run a scan yet; just close the program once the update completes.

- Open ewido. In the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process completes, exit from Ewido.

- Open MS Antispyware beta. Make sure the "AntiSpyware Autoupdater" feature is enabled, and that it has downloaded the most current antispyware updates. Close the program after you've verified this.

- Open Avast! and make sure that it has the most current virus definitions installed. Again- don't scan yet, just close the program once it's updated.

3. Run HijackTHis again, put a check mark next to the following entries, and then click the "Fix checked" button:

4. Reboot into Safe Mode and:

Open CCleaner.
- Go to Options-> Advanced: Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
- Go to Options>CustomFolders>Add Folder>Navigate to these folders (click on bold file once and hit OK) :
* C:\Windows\Temp
* C:\Windows\Prefetch
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.)
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Cookies
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Cookies
Hit OK

- In left pane, scroll down to "Advanced, Custom Folders", put a check in Custom Folders

- Click on Run Cleaner

It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.

- Run Avast!, MS Antispyware, and ewido; have the programs fix all malicious items they find.

When ewido finds the first malicious object on your system, it will ask you if it should clean it. When it asks this, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning; you'll be including that log in your next post here.

- Run Spy Sweeper.
* Under the Sweep Options tab, select ALL options under 'What to Sweep'.
* Click the "Sweep" icon and then "Start" to begin scanning.
*When the scan completes, click Next to automatically quarantine all detected items.
*Click the Results icon, select Session Log, and then click Save to File. Save the scan results to your desktop and close Spy Sweeper.

5. Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Search for the following files and delete them if found:

C:\WINDOWS\sembako-cfzjlmg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ShellNew\bbm-yrnlmgfc.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\br7911on.exe
hplun.dll

- Delete the following folders entirely:

C:\Program Files\NewDotNet
C:\Program Files\Need2Find

6. Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the logs that ewido and Spy Sweeper generated.

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Can you tell us anything about the proxy server setting in this log entry:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = socks=localhost:1080

and the DNS server IP addresses in this entry:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{77EDD71A-5EDF-42D4-8B14-95D1316B2A2C}: NameServer = 172.16.240.250,172.16.240.251

Thanks DMR,

I explain two settings above.

[1] That is HTTP tunnel. I used and opened the port 1080 for tunneling the trillian basic for accessing the yahoo messenger and MSN messenger.

[2] I set the TCP/IP manually, so 172.16.240.250/x.x.x.251 are DNS gateway prefer and alternative.

*Is there any trouble with that?

But unfortunately I can't run Hijackthis.exe and any kind of exe (execute application). That's one thing. Another thing is I can't open any hidden files(s)/folder(s). The worst case, I even can't open this website through my computer or open DaniWebIT email via my email, the computer will reboot automatically. So, I can't do whatever you are told to do. So, I don't know what to do. :-|

OK- I thought the TCP-related entries were legit; just wanted to make sure.

What exactly happens when you try to run .exes? We'll need to resolve that first, and I might have a fix, but I'll need some details on the problem first.

I don't know what exactly is running behind when I double-click/run a .exe file. But the result is the computer automatically shutdown, without warning(unlike sassers worm). The same result occured when:
1) I try to open MSConfig, run a telnet;ftp at CMD, download a .exe file;
2) I try to run the Hijackthis.exe or try to open the hijackthis.log;
3) I try to open this website and ccleaner.com (until now, these two can't open[no offend]).

What happened exactly?I myself didn't know the detail of the problem

But, I know the only way to solve it is to restore it before it infected(if the system restore functioning and exist before).

previously, I succeed to open hijack and post it here because the system is heavy with applications I opened. So, it takes time to shutdown and hijackthis.exe runs and log the processes. But failed to proceed as the computer already shutdown. So, I have to open many applications again so I can slow the time taken to shutdown as I wanted to open hijackthis.log and copy it to post it here. :).huh.

That is what happened. I can't tell you in detail as I myself don't know how.

*This also occured when I try in safe mode.

I found this with search funtion on windows, if I try to enter hidden folders, the computer shutdown. So, I'll list down the files that I found harm (I think).

bron.tok-12-20.exe
bron.tok-12-21.exe
bron.tok-12-22.exe
bron.tok-12-23.exe
bron.tok-12-24.exe
bron.tok-12-28.exe
bron.tok-12-29.exe
bron.tok-14-22.exe
bron.tok-14-23.exe
bron.tok-14-28.exe
bron.tok-18-20.exe
bron.tok-18-23.exe
and so on..there's many of them.I moved to another new folder.

Their core executeable file..(I think)
br7911on.exe - found at c:\..\user\local settings\application data\
br4743on.exe - found at c:\windows\media

and many more of them..

The brontok worm also duplicate critical process like

smss.exe
csrss.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
svchost.exe
winlogon.exe
inetinfo.exe

found at c:\..\user\local settings\application data\

also found at c:\windows\media

I found this folder -> Loc.Mail.Bron.Tok and contain many of emails of whom i know (used to send and received emails from them) as file name with extension.ini
These are the contents I have copied:

Brontok.A
By: HVM31
-- JowoBot #VM Community --

Another things are this worms also duplicates itself into the directory with the name of its parent directory.

I assume the attacks are like this:

Brontok worms get into computers by internet (we all know that)..mostly.
and then hide the folder option at the menu bar of explorer, so we can't change the option of show/hide extension. Because the brontok executable file change its icon into folder icon and duplicate itself according to name of folders in directory. So, many computer users are cheated with this tactic. Furthermore they close the cmd as I found this on c:\windows\system

cmd-bro-mlx.exe
cmd-brontok.exe

because of that i can't open command prompt.I think I know this worm originated from.Remember that all these exe file are iconed with folder icon.

I found this http://www.indosiar.com/welcome/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=1&TOPIC_ID=21853&#1438892 when I search the internet.It said something like this and define what I have told above:

Everyday at 17.08 it will
- duplicate itself to folder "DOCUMENT"(I think more than "document") with appropriate name.
- duplicate itself to system folder
- probably change system Host to "SYSTEMPATH\Drivers\etc\hosts"

This virus is the variant of virus MyLove, the different is, the virus spread moral messages likely to be html such as:

BRONTOK.A[10]
-- Hentikan kebobrokan di negeri ini --
(I don't know what is the meaning of this. I think this is bribery)

1. Penjarakan Koruptor, Penyelundup, Tukang Suap, & Bandar NARKOBA
( Send to "NUSAKAMBANGAN")
(Prison the corruptor, smugler, bribe and city of NARKOBA )

2. Stop Free Sex, Aborsi, & Prostitusi
( Go To HELL )
( Stop Free Sex, Abortion and prostitution)

3. Stop pencemaran lingkungan, pembakaran hutan & perburuan liar.
( Stop the pollution, burning the forest and hunt the wild)

4. SAY NO TO DRUGS !!!

Your assessment of the worm is quite accurate; compare it to Sophos Anti-Virus' overview of the infection:

When first run W32/Brontok-I copies itself to:

<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\br6591on.exe
<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\csrss.exe
<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\inetinfo.exe
<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\lsass.exe

<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\smss.exe
<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\svchost.exe
<Windows>\KesenjanganSosial.exe
<Windows>\ShellNew\RakyatKelaparan.exe
<System>\cmd-brontok.exe

The following registry entries are created to run br6591on.exe and RakyatKelaparan.exe on startup:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Tok-Cirrhatus-2784
<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\br6591on.exe

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Bron-Spizaetus
<Windows>\ShellNew\RakyatKelaparan.exe

The following registry entry is changed to run KesenjanganSosial.exe on startup:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell
Explorer.exe "<Windows>\KesenjanganSosial.exe"

(the default value for this registry entry is "Explorer.exe" which causes the Microsoft file <Windows>\Explorer.exe to be run on startup).

The following registry entry is set, disabling the registry editor (regedit):

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
DisableRegistryTools

Registry entries are set as follows:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

All of the files you listed, including those with names identical to valid Windows files (csrss.exe, lsass.exe, etc.), can and should be deleted, although I'm not sure how we can deal with this given how crippled the system is. How much can you accomplish in Safe Mode; do you have any more functionality in Safe Mode than you do when booted normally?

Thank you DMR,

But currently, I have found a software that repair the all registry that has been changed by Brontok virus. So far, it has made my folder options value ar registry = 1 (which means 'show') and other registry problems that occured when the virus attacked. But it does not remove or clean or delete or whatever to the virus. Now, my system have showed the extension file. So, in my case, I just leave the job to hunt the virus by searching file with extension *.exe and file size approximately 44KB. Then, wipe it off.

So far it works, but the software I talk about doesn't kick out the virus permanently. Other antivirus software should support and wipe all the virus. But then, you must make sure that other computer in your network had been cleaned, otherwise it will spread by your network.

TQ.

Problem solved.

Thank you DMR.

I should post my latest Hijack just to make sure everything is gonna be fine.

Thank you again.

Unfortunately, it can sometimes take the antivirus companies a bit of time to analyze a new virus and release a fix for it. Until that happens, manually removing the viral components (as you did) is the only option.

Your log looks pretty clean now; there are only a few things to clean up:

1. Open your Add/Remove Programs control panel and uninstall the Need2Search/MWSearch software if you find it in the list of installed programs.

2. The "O1 - Hosts: 127.4.7.4" log entries are malicious hosts file URL redirects; they prevent your browser from reaching the anti-virus & anti-spyware websites listed in the entries:

a) Open your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS file with Windows Notepad (the file is a plain-text file) and delete all of the lines beginning with "127.4.7.4". Alternately, you can download the program Hoster which can restore your host file to its original state. To do that, run Hoster, click on the Restore Original Hosts button, and then exit Hoster.

b) The location of the valid Windows Hosts file on an XP system is in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ folder, but malicious programs can install their own Hosts file elsewhere and direct Windows to that file instead of the valid Hosts file. Search your entire system for files names "Hosts" and delete any that are found in locations other than C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\.

c) Also check the Registry entry which specifies the location of the Hosts file and make sure that it has not been altered:

* Open the Registry Editor: Click the "Run..." option under your Start menu, type "regedit" (omit the quotes) in the resulting "Open:" dialog box, and then hit Enter.
* In the left-hand pane of the Editor, navigate to theHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters key.
* In the right-hand pane, verify that the "DataBasePath" value is set to: %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc. If it is set to a different location, double-click on "DataBasePath" and replace the existing data with: %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc.
* Close the Editor after that.

3. Run HijackThis and have it fix:

1. Open your Add/Remove Programs control panel and uninstall the Need2Search/MWSearch software if you find it in the list of installed programs.

Done.

-Deleted all lines begin with 127.4.7.4
-Download the hoster and made it restore to microsoft original hosts file and also made it readOnly file.
-*your hoster.zip that you gave isn't working. I downloaded it elsewhere.

b) The location of the valid Windows Hosts file on an XP system is in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ folder, but malicious programs can install their own Hosts file elsewhere and direct Windows to that file instead of the valid Hosts file.

-checked and it's ok.

Hmm..Actually I still don't understand, because I have cleaned my PC with Avast and all the brontok virus has been deleted/move to chest. But, everyday when I scan my PC the virus still wandering in my PC. Just want to know that is there a nodus operandi file that still in my PC and still duplicating itself?If there is, which file?

That's what I'm hoping to find out. The virus is fairly new, and there isn't much in-depth info available on it.

Give us as much specific info as possible (filr names, folder locations, etc.).

1 ) At system root.
2 ) At C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data

They still duplicating name of folder into their application.

But, last time I have deleted all files associate with Brontok in that folder manually. I believe that folder was the main base. Because it has csrss.exe;winlogon.exe... and many more like Loc.Bron.Mail.18x folder, list.host18, update.Bron.tok.Loc.18. Like just now, I deleted their files, I'm sure tomorrow they will appear again. Huh.

I guess this thread should be right place to show this, because I've tried to send to the email but failed.

Unexpected error occurred!

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com , mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

I try to fix checked box process, it's a virus (Brontok). Im using windows xp sp2 pro.

Can you run any other executables (aside from HijackThis) yet?

After I ran the Indonesion software I mentioned before. I'm able to run executable files. Before that, I can't, including HijackThis. Now, a cmd.exe file will run at sudden at a random time. But, the problem is I don't know what trigger it.

OK- since you can run programs now, let's try what we couldn't try before:

* C:\Windows\Temp
* C:\Windows\Prefetch
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.)
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Cookies
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Cookies

4. Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the logs that ewido and Spy Sweeper generated.

done all command:

I think for ewido and Spy sweeper I don't save the log!..OMG. I forgot it. :p . I must somehow skipped it without noticed. But , I tell you that mostly spyware detected from both software are from bar and games. Because I monitored when they are scanning.

thank you.

I was following this thread coz my friend's PC seems to be infected with this worm too. Coz she lives far away so I don't have direct access to the PC and that makes it hard to fix it. While doing some searching on Brontok.A I came across the following:

http://std.kku.ac.th/4630203927/virus/CS_DevEvil.zip

Being cautious i ran it on my own PC while tracing the files and registry entries it accesses. My verdict is that it's a proper cleaning tool. It will kill the running instances of the virus, delete the executables and fix the registry. Of course I didn't have the virus on my own PC but I will ask my friend to run it tomorrow and see what the result is. This info might be useful to other people that have the same problem.

Thanks RuudDude,

I haven't tried to fix anything yet, but I had run the tool and it is proper enough to kill process, delete main base of the worm, fix registry, and remove infected files or duplicated worms. I think this is way cool than the previous tool I used. Anyway, thanks again dude. I mean RuudDude. :p
