Spyware/Malware? - Fake Windows Genuine Notification

I'm having some issues and was hoping someone may be able to assist. When booting up I receive a message that the disk needs to be checked however it then indicates that autocheck cannot check the disk due to a configuration error from a software upgrade. Windows then proceeds to load and upon loading a box pops up saying its a Windows Genuine Notification and I'm not running a licensed version of Windows (however I am - store bought laptop running Windows 7). I googled this and saw some mention of a virus which disguised itself as the windows genuine notification but can't seem to get rid of it. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
