Explorer is running in the background and I can't stop it. This has been going on for a week or so. Explorer sometimes runs as two processes simultaneously, one under "New User" and one under "System".

I use Firefox 99.9% of the time.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Don't worry, that is perfectly normal. Windows Explorer is fundamental to the function of the Windows environment.

This program gives you a little more information on a particular program or driver and who it belongs to.

Also, you can Google the name of the process you see running.

And, one more thing to reassure you, try this experiment. In Task Manager, if you click on File and "Run", and then type in "explorer.exe" you will see another window open. If you use task manager and kill all the processes for "explorer.exe", you will see your desktop disappear. You will get it back immediately when in Task Manager you type, "explorer.exe" in that "Run" box you used a moment ago in task manager.

Just to add another note, I assume the reason why you were concerend is because of your statement regarding Firefox and when you saw "explorer.exe" running you were concerned because you didn't have Internet Explorer running. I understanding the confusion if this is the case.

Internet Explorer runs as "iexplore.exe", not explorer.exe". Hope that helps.

Yes, correct. Sorry about the vagueness of my intitial post. I kept getting a formatting error when I tried to post the logs so I shortened my description perhaps too much.

iexporer.exe runs in the background even when I don't start Internet Explorer myself. After a few minutes, it sucks up a lot of memory. As of yesterday, it runs two processes at the same time, doubling the problem. I ran Malware Bytes when it first started happening and found three or four items that were removed. The problem has not gone away, though.

To BigPaw: I'm not referring to Windows Explorer, I' talking about Internet Explorer: iexplorer.exe

I think you may have a problem with those 6 shell extensions GMER picked up in registry.

You're talking to a non professional here. Can you be more specific and suggest what I might do with them?

Thanks.

Sure. I have no idea what they are there for, but those 6 instances have a GUID of {2A9F2178-EA4A-BD24-5CC8-73B0410FC935} - that would reference a CLSID, and what that would do is anybody's guess. That GUID is not catalogued. Try this: get ShellExView from Nirsoft, the zipped, non-installing version is fine, unzip and run the executable. Look along the display until you find that GUID. Tell what information there is about it.
May be barking up the wrong tree here... :)

Free.
Something else.... note lines 791, 73 in your first post. Those errors pop, I think, because you have too many System Restore points. You need to remove them, create a new one, and limit the space given over to points.

gerbil - My problem is resolved. I've run through a few recommended cleanings and things are running fine.

Thank you for responding.
