Internet Explorer & Windows Explorer (desktop shortcuts) Won't Load!

Hi everyone, it's my first post here, so play nice! ;)

Everything was working fine on the computer (Win XP), and then all hell broke loose. I downloaded a video clip from a friend off msn, and then after watching it, I could no longer load up Internet Explorer, or Windows explorer. None of the folder shortcuts on my desktop work anymore (I'm assuming b/c windows explorer is the program that's used for exploring folders). Now I don't know if the video file is the cause, but it happened after watching the video.

In any case, when I click on the IE icon, nothing happens, and when I click on windows explorer or any other folder shortcuts on the desktop, all the icons and even the taskbar disappears for a couple of seconds, and then reappears.

I have a lot of work and valuable IE Bookmarks/Favourites, so I can't afford to lose the ability to browse for my files. I'm using netscape right now to type this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

edit: I've also tried to do a System Restore to the previous day. It didnt work, and I haven't unrestored it.

Nothing is lost. Nescape/Mozilla can import favorites from Internet Explorer, and Microsoft provides favtool.exe , which works both ways.

But these are only temporary solutions. Your long-term problem is a hijacker, Trojan, or Virus that's wedged its way into your desktop. This can happen because Internet Explorer is an integrated part of Windows. I can almost guarantee that you have Active Desktop turned on, and a hijacker running.

You are going to have to download and run HijackThis . Note: read the instructions on the linked page very carefully (the main download link is broken -- use one of the mirrors). Do not actually remove anything from your startup or Registry until you have posted the log that it generates and are given explicit instructions on what to remove. You should also read my article on this subject (in my signature below) followed by this article--that I was planning to write, but Grinler beat me to it :cheesy:.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy so it can't be used.

What problems are you having ?????

I'm having the same problems as everyone else on this thread, and I have XP Home Edition. I can't open any file on my computer, as in anything that is a file, not just "My Computer" (I can open installed programs though). So, I've tried to download Hijack This, but when I do, I can't open it anywhere. I've tried puting the folder in various places (C:/ drive, Program Files, Desktop, etc...)

Ugh, I'm so frustrated right now. Any help is appreciated IMMENSLY!

Oh my goodness people have actually replied to my post! I thought I was subscribed to it, so I was waiting for email notification that people have been responding.

Anyways, the problem is still there, and I'm in the process of reading and downloading the HIJACK THIS program page.

In the last few days, I've been trying to run other programs, such as Registry Rescue by PC Privacy Software.
It said it found about 302 errors in the registry, and well, I said "check all" and "fix all". The computer is still working ....but the problem is STILL there. I can only assume that I didn't do any harm to the computer or mess up any other programs /plug-ins. If you guys think that was a bad move, tell me now so I can restore the old registry!!

But in any case, folder shortcuts won't work still (incl. My Computer, Recycle bin, control panel, IE). I've resorted to going into MS Word and clicking on 'open' and browsing my folders that way. Quite annoying.

Like BENTKEY's case, everything seems to work fine in Safe Mode.
I'll try running HJT and post the log.

Ok i've encountered another problem----
Someone said to unzip it in C:\HJT ....but if i do that, without being able to open up windows explorer, I won't be able to run the program, since it doesn't create a shortcut for it onto the desktop or anything. Can I run the program straight off the Desktop??

I also downloaded IE 6 SP1 and installed that today.
I think BENTKEY had the same problem as me--tried running "search" and again all my icons and taskbar disappeared & reappeared.

my life's been a living hell for the past few days with this computer problem.

I see your problem. You haveWindowBlinds installed, a clever hack that wedges into the desktop. You have two hijackers: MyWebSearch and HungryHands. The result is massive confusion as the hijackers don't "understand" WindowBlinds.

To start, you need to boot into Safe Mode and disable WindowBlinds/CursorXP, then boot into the normal desktop and run
Ad-Aware and/or Spybot - Search & Destroy . Be sure to update the detection data files before running either program.

After your scan(s), re-run HjT and see if the following have been removed:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program
Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BCF96FB4-5F1B-497B-AECC-910304A55011} - C:\WINDOWS\hhU.dll

Here's one that should be removed, as well:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

You can read more in my articles and links. See my signature below.

You have the peper trojan. Download the removal tool from http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe & let it do it's thing. There will be no dialogue. Note that you must be online when you run the tool for it to be effective. You must then reboot your computer.

Download & instal Adaware from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506
& update it B4 scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
Also in tweaks under 'cleaning engine' set it to 'Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object.

Download & instal Spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Update it B4 scanning. Go into settings & have it check for Beta releases also & download if available.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it.

Then post another log as there will be more to do.

Crunchie---are your instructions for me? or for someone else's log?? Everybody's jumping in on this, creating such confusions!!

I see your problem. You have WindowBlinds installed, a clever hack that wedges into the desktop.

Ok this might be a stupid question, but how do I disable Windowblinds? If I simply right click the desktop>appearance and change the style back to 'xp windows' style then windowblinds is disabled right? Why do I need to do it in Safe Mode? and how is it done? :-|

So windowblinds and cursorxp is creating the confusion for the adaware and spybot, not allowing them to clean up the computer? Reason I ask is b/c I've had both windowblinds and cursorxp for a long time now (>1 year) and I haven't done any changes to them lately (before or after the computer screw up).

Thanks guys for alll your help--it is truly appreciated!

Well, I downloaded the new version of Ad Aware, ran it again, and it found about 13 components, and spy-bot found 1 red component (Alexa). I also had windowblinds and cursorxp disabled when I ran the search.

and....EVERYTHING SEEMS TO WORK AGAIN!

When I ran Hijackthis again, there was only ONE line that was no longer there:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BCF96FB4-5F1B-497B-AECC-910304A55011} - C:\WINDOWS\hhU.dll

I'm going to assume that was the problem entry!

Is it safe to turn windowblinds and cursorxp back on??

Again, thanx for all the help!
