Re: MSN messenger has encountered an error and needs to close

Not sure ul get a reply from mattpas, nomee, thread is well old. You run a windows Repair from the installation media.... it is a part of Setup that searches for and repairs an old installation thereby saving your data. No formatting is involved.
Mmm.... I see now that you are also in another thread that was also not started by you, with crunchie... follow his advice.

Re: MSN messenger has encountered an error and needs to close

Before you contemplate a complete windows repair you should try to reinstall just Messenger from your XP installation CD. The CD should match your SP status... eg XP-SP2... Not got one? - borrow it.
-Open an Explorer window, do a search for msmsgs.inf -the default location for this file is in the C:\Windows\Inf folder [or show hidden files and folders and navigate to it].
-Right click the msmsgs.inf file, and then click Install.
-Insert your Windows XP SP2 CD-ROM when prompted and on it locate the I386 folder, click Open, and then click OK.
The Messenger files are installed and registry entries corrected.
Say how you get on.

Re: MSN messenger has encountered an error and needs to close

windows xp came pre-installed on the computer so I do not have a disc. I spent the greater part of the day dealing with tech from Qwest, msn, and HP, so hopefully the problem is fixed now. :]
Thanks!
