Well, I ended up being on my own figuring it out, but for anyone who has a similar problem and runs across this post, the problem was fixed by running my firewall 24/7 (even though I'm on dial-up), so it must have been some malicious program trying to connect to my computer. McAfee AntiSpyware hasn't found it, nor has F-Prot Antivirus with newest virus definitions, so I never suspected it until the firewall definitively eliminated the problem.
