MHTML or is it?

Expand Post »
This is my first post so be gentle guys!!

I got the MHTML redirect virus. I'm running Norton Firewall and Anti Virus which picked it up after a scan but now the firewall part keeps prompting for allowing access to sites I've visited countless times in the past. The system also runs very slow. I run Adaware but it didn't find anything.
I'm running XP Home on a Dell Dimension 4400, 256 Mb, 37gb drive and broadband.
Should I run Hijackthis - I noted that there is a sticky note on this forum saying that this is a last resort.

Thanks in advance

Re: MHTML or is it?

Yep, you can run it. The sticky is just to ask that users run adaware & spybot B4 posting as it makes it a lot easier to clear out what is left & reduces the amount of posts required, less time etc.
Make sure that you install it into it's own permanent folder.

Re: MHTML or is it?

Hjt is in a temp folder. Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or the desktop & not directly on your hard drive). Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 193.133.96.252 2KSERVER2

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete

C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinServices.exe< file
c:\program files\dialers< folder

Reboot normally after doing the above then post a fresh log plz.

Re: MHTML or is it?

I ran the YAHA removal tool and it found nothing.
The winservices.exe and dialer folder were also not present.
Did the fix checked on the stuff detailed and this is the hjt log after all of the above.
