For the past 2 weeks I suddenly have been having problem with Internet Explorer. When I click on any web page the error message appears Cannot find server and at the bottom it says Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer. Sometimes when I click on Detect Network settings it will load the page or if I go back and then try it again it might work but, it's almost all the time I have tried everything. Even when I'm offline the page will pop up for no reason and interrupts other things I am doing at the time. Another page that might pop up occasionally is Action canceled Internet Explorer. This just started happening is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I'm getting very frustrated.

sounds like you got some kind of virus or spyware...

grab adware and scan your computer... or download hijackthis. also get some AV on there too!

http://s89223352.onlinehome.us/mirror/hjt/

and post your log in the security forum.

It sounds that way to me as well, so I'm moving this to our Security Forum.

KimMik1982,

Have a read through the following post to find out how to download, configure, and use a few of the recommended (and free) "malware" detection and removal programs:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

If you have any questions once you've followed the advice in the above thread, please repost with as much specific information as possible.

I really appreciate all of your help with my problem. I downloaded spybot and an antivirus and now my internet is working good again. Thank you!
I have one other problem though, when I ran the Spybot it fixed everything except one thing called HotBar. Do you know how I could get rid of this one? For some reason it cannot complete. Something keeps popping up at the end saying the parameters are incorrect. And also when I'm playing a game the screen minimizes in the middle for no reason. I would appreciate any advice you could give me on this problem. Thanks again for all you have done so far.

Kim

Here's how to post a Hijack This log - the whole spiel, with (hopefully) every eventuality covered... :

Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=3155&file=9&evp=3304750663b552982a8baee6434cfc13 , and download 'Hijack This!'.
When downloading, choose "save to disk" and NOT open!

Now this download is a *.zipfile, which means you need to decompress it with a utility like WinZip

Many downloads come in the shape of a compressed file, so it's an indispensible tool, really.
It has an evaluation version which you can use for a month or so
Here's a tutorial. It's extremely easy to do.

Now create a new folder for it, C:\Hijackthis, for example.
After unzipping the file to C:\Hijack This, you'll end up with the file itself, which is Hijackthis.exe, and that's the one you'll need to doubleclick.'

When the program launches, hit the "Scan" button
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, and save the log anywhere you like.

Now if you doubleclick the log file, does it open in Notepad?

If so, go to Edit > Select all, then to Edit > copy.
Now you've copied the entire text to the Windows Clipboard (this happens behind your back.)

Next, go back to this forum thread, and click "Post Reply".
In an empty area click your RIGHT mouse button, and choose 'Paste' from the context menu.
And voila, there's your Hijack This log.
Don't fix anythin yet post the log here and we'll have a look

NOTE: Should the log not open in Notepad by default, do this:

. Highlight the logfile by clicking on it once
· Hold down the shift key and then right-click your mouse
· Select "Open With" from the menu
. Pick Notepad.exe.

Be sure to check the box, "Always use this program to open these files".

· Click "OK" and you are all done!

Thanks for your help but, I'm new at all this and I don't quite understand what to do. I went to the site you advised me to go to and when it downloaded it did not give me the option to save to disk. Just to save to desktop or other files. And in making the new folder C:\Hijackthis it said that I could not have \ in the file name. Do I need to have this in the name or can I just name it Hijackthis? I'm sorry for asking dumb questions but like I said I've never had to do anything like this before.
Thanks,
Kim

You don't name the foler c:\ hijack just hijack the c:\ is automatic ,c:\ is the folders path

If you want to you can also create a folder on your desktop & place the hijackthis.exe in to that folder. Right click on your desktop then select: New then Folder. Name it hijackthis. As long as hijackthis is in it's own folder, it's ok (provided that the folder is not within a temporary folder).

I sent a hijack this log. What do I do next?
Kim

Go to add/remove programs & uninstall Webhancer.

Download & instal Adaware from here
& update it before scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
In 'tweaks' under 'scanning engine' set it to 'unload recognised processes during scanning.'
Also in 'tweaks' under 'cleaning engine' set it to 'Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion' & 'let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.'
Select 'activate in-depth scan' before starting scan.
When the scan is finished select 'next.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object. Reboot

Post a new log please.

I downloaded adaware and deleted 79 items found. Here is my new log.
Thanks,
Kim

Do you know what this is:?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NB Window Patterns] C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\NUTS&B~1\WINDBKGD.EXE

If not, go to the folder in question & find this file C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\NUTS&B~1\WINDBKGD.EXE, right click & go properties & gather some intelligence on it & post it here.

I don't know what it is and I can't find it with the search.
Everything seems to be working fine now. Since I posted that last log all my problems have cleared up. Is there anything else that I have to do? I want to thank all of you for working with me through all of this. I really appreciate it.
Kim

Judging from the truncated name, that looks like a component of the Nuts & Bolts utility package (similar to Norton Systemworks).

Thanks DMR. I ran a google on the .exe & came up with zilch.

Yeah, I ran a search on the .exe and came up with squiddly as well. Just as I was doing the search I remembered the Nuts & Bolts product; haven't seen/used it in ages, but I am pretty sure that's what it is.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE POSTED HERE. I TOO GET THE MESSAGE "CANNOT FIND SERVER" AND I HAVE TO REBOOT MY PC IF I WANT TO CONTINUE SURFING THE NET. HOW DID YOU GET RID OF THIS MESSAGE? I HAD ADAWARE, SPYKILLER, AND NORTON AV.....I STILL GET THIS DRATTED MESSAGE. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY TO POST TO YOU....HOPE YOU GET IT......THANKS CARBOKID

Crunchie....You gave me the same instructions to me regarding "Cannot find server"...I think it was a couple days ago. I haven't had time to get back to tell you till tonight, I downloaded Adaware, updated and scanned. The nect thing to do is click on Settings.....I don't know where to find that....so I didn't get any further. I skimmed the rest of the instructions, and I don't know if I am able to get through all this. Got any encouraging words for me? I was doing fine surfing the net before this darn message showed up. Thanks I'm also new in this forum. Probably didn't post in the right place? I have so much to learn. Carbokid

Hi again :) . First up you should reply in your own thread by hitting the reply button. If you cannot find it, here it is;

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread9143.html

To get to settings in Adaware just click on the gear looking icon at the top part of the Adaware window.

hey folks,
to whomsoever that had this problem with error message:cannot find server, some one had posted a reply to change the user name to the original user name for it may have been changed and also to uninstall Norton and reinstall it. well i tried both. for some reason norton would not let me uninstall, because it kept saying that i needed a supervisor or administrator to uninstall norton. so i would go to norton and it showed i was not even logged on. my user was disabled. so i enabled norton and now everything works fine!! i have been sitting in front of this computer for god knows how many days and how many cinnamon buns i have burnt, forgetting i was baking them and the burnt smell would send me rushing to the kitchen!!.... all is well. :D :surprised ;)  :cheesy:

hello. I am having the same problems. I ran the hijacker program and this is what came up. PLease i need help....
