whenever I switch on the computer, an error message box comes up which is titled
'http://page error 404 and instructs Reload page error

then an ms dos window comes up with the title Winsta0\Default

then a web page tries to load in ie which is.. http://xlogin.net.firms.com/mail.html

then an error message comes up titled ' 16 bit MS-Dos subsystem' which in a box has
Winsta0\Default
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:OdbfIP:00ld OP: ff ff ff ff ff ff Chose 'close' to terminate the application

then the dial up connection box comes up
(I generally close it and close all the boxes)

then you can work as normal - but occasionally when you are on line it comes up again

Is the xlogin.net.firms.com location at all familiar to you? If not, the errors might be the result of virus/spyware infection; error messages similar to yours seem to be linked to those nasties in some cases. I'd make sure your anti-virus program's virus definitions are absolutely up-to-date and run a full system scan. You might also want to read through many of threads in our Security forum to find out what a wide range of problems trojans, spyware, and other malicious programs can cause. Many of the threads in Security also describe how to install and use some well-recommended (and free) tools to detect and remove the pests.

My antivirus is up to date.. how do I do a full scan.. ? ( thank you for help!)

Move on over to the Security Fourm ,
And after that, please do the following:

Download 'Hijack This!'.HERE
Download link is on the left

Unzip (extract) it to a folder of its own.Like c:\HJT\hijackthis.exe , Then Doubleclick HijackThis.exe (in the new folder), and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, then Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. for hijackthis, most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

reboot computer and post a new hijackthis log

What Anyivirus program are you using ,if its on auto scan It all ready missed what you caught!
Run this free online virus scan and make sure you check off auto fix before you run it .
