Starting any MS Office App starts an install process - Uncertain if virus?

Expand Post »
My first post here; I've read the FAQs and some example posts, and hope I'm doing this correctly!

As of two days ago, every time I open an MS Office application (Office 2002 Pro, a.k.a. "Office XP Pro") on my XP SP2 machine an install process is started and these information windows start:

1) Title: Windows Installer
Content: "Preparing to install..."
2) Title: Microsoft Office XP Professional
Content: "Please wait while Microsoft configures Microsoft Office XP Professional"
3) Title: Microsoft Office XP Professional
Content: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Office XP Professional' disk and click OK. (Pulldown and Browse button provided to point to source).

< Now press CANCEL>

4) Title: Microsoft Office XP Professional
Content: Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\Profeam Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\SETUP.HLP.

< Now press OK>

Then the whole sequence repeats one or two times, and finally goes away and the application starts, seemingly correctly.

I've not put the Office CD disk in; the whole sequence is inappropriate and I'm reluctant to do what it asks for.

The Office suite has been running for 18 months or so on this machine, and has been online registered with Microsoft. I've never had this problem before.

I've made no hardware changes in the last year, and added no software within the last month or so except for HijackThis.

I realize that this problem may not be a virus issue at all, but it seemed so odd that I am concerned that it is.

I've scanned "deep" with Checkpoint ZoneAlarm, which is set to update its database automatically and scan every day.

I've searched on Daniweb and MS.com, but cannot find a comparable situation.

Following is a HijackThis log, with the Hosts table information cut out for security reasons. If you wouldn't mind looking at the HijackThis log with an eye to critiquing my system in general, I'd appreciate it very much!

Thank you very much for looking at my problem, and any light you can shed!

David

Re: Starting any MS Office App starts an install process - Uncertain if virus?

Hi,

This not a virus. It is a normal office process that happens once after trying to open office applications for the first time, or over a new user. Mainly it is overcomed by leaving the office setup files on the disk (it is an option that shows at the end of installation). Simply insert the CD and in seconds it will finish and will never appear again. This can be also shown because of improper installation or after installing multiple versions of office.

Re: Starting any MS Office App starts an install process - Uncertain if virus?

kb.net,

Thanks very much, your suggestion worked! I do not know what triggered the problem, none of the scenarios you mentioned had happened, but after reading the install disk for a few seconds the Office Suite was happy again.

I apologize for my paranoia!

Thanks so much!
