Explorer.exe restarting problem

Expand Post »
Hi
1 week ago i downloaded a keygen from a site and i got a virus/trojan. My explorer.exe keeps restarting. I tried to scan my computer with 6/7 different virus-scanners, but they all found nothing. I read a couple of threads before i came here, and i think it has something to do with a dll file in C:\windows\system\ or C:\windows\system32\ . I did a scan with an online virus scanner, and it told me i had a corrupted dll file. I didnt know how to fix it then, but now i cant find the site so i dont know what file i have to delete. It was a scan which took a couple of seconds and you had to buy the program to fix the file... maybe you guys know which scanner it was. Here is my Hijackthis log:

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

You preseumably did a registry clean?

Anyway, have a read of this piece of useful information regarding WINPOL.EXE.
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/viru...NT.IWD&VSect=T

It means that Windows stuff isn't likely to be in a state of grace.

If you're lucky, a straight Windows Repair from the Windows CD will put things right/

But in any case. l;ook into C:\, C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System32 and look for anything created on or around the date and time that you downloaded that Keygen thing. These items are to be suspected and should be removed or you could come back to the forum for guidance.

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

Registry Clean: I use Advanced Windows Care. Some are free, this costs a small amount.

Repair Procedure: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

WINPOL.EXE restarting: that's what these trojans do. There's something else in there, as I'm sure you realise, that regenerates it. Although I didn't see it in your HJT. What nmakes you think it's restarting?

Did you note the date and time of the WINPOL file and did that coincide with your running of Keygen?

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

That's why you need to do the Windows repair to hopefully put everything back into a state of grace.

It means that Windows stuff isn't likely to be in a state of grace - provided that all malware has been fixed.

If the malware hasn't been removed, then it would seem that it is controlling Windows Explorer and you'll need to do the heavy removal stuff id a Windows repair doesn't do the trick.

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

I fixed the EXPLORER.EXE restarting problem. There was a file : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PMKHE.DLL that was made on the day the problem started to apear. I couldn't delete it in windows, so i deleted it in the windows recovery console. Upon restart everything was normal again.

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

I'm so pleased you fixed it. So many people fail to see the importance of matching the date/time of the first event with unsigned DLLs, EXEs or SYS or INF files in the System32 folder.

You did and you got the problem solved. Great.

Re: Explorer.exe restarting problem

Good advice Suspishio! I let my brother use my computer and it only took him one day to mess it up, apparently by going to the wrong site; that I suspect found a security hole in windows to download something very annoying. I could see some suspicious processes but couldn't get rid of them because they regenerated themselves. I ran several anti-virus/spyware programs and found nothing. Finally I did a search on the suspected date and what do you know, files with random letters and numbers! lol I deleted them and fixed very annoying problem
