Missing status bar in new IE window

When I open a new window in IE be pressing Ctrl+n, the new winodw comes up without a status bar. This doesn't happen if I open IE from the icon on the taskbar, just when I use Ctrl+n or file/new/window. I have windowsxp pro and IE 6.
Whats wrong with it?

nothing, to get it back click on view (top of page) then click on status bar
