IE6 Problem Username/Password Link Error

I get an error when I click on a link with a username and password. EX: http://username:password@members.home.com for example. i click on this type of link and i get the error from internet explorer saying that it is not a proper link. when i go to the website and manually click on a login link and type in the username and password it works fine. can someone help me please?
