cant connect to internet 98se

Hello
First time user. I am using a friends old computer running 98se. Everytime i try to access the internet on dial up it connects,the two screens show up in the right hand corner of the monitor but i am always gettinmg the error message microsoft internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, with a tick in the box for restating internet explorer. I have tried removing and re installing ie6, i have tried firefox but still will not connect properly. It started after i had tried to load a router for broadband and i a running out of ideas. The error message i get when opening outlok express is an msimn. If any body can help Thanks

Sorted this one out myself. Downloaded a program called winsockfix.exe.
