It could be viruses. Try scanning your computer with anti-virus program.

Any error messages? How far can you get in the shutdown process, what happens at end?

Actually I have reinstalled windows xp recently on my computer. When i try to shut down my computer from start menu, the computer just doesn't do anything. Also there are no error messages as such.So i have to first log off my computer and then shut it down. Any idea friend regarding why it is not shutting down directly.

remove the power cable and let it scan.. ..then again i would have done this after 30 seconds.. your patience is commendable.
