Urgent - problem with links

Expand Post »
I am running Windows XP Home Edition on my PC. I have been having a problem with links for a while now. When I click on a link in my email, or a link in a webpage that would normally open in a new IE window, my screen just flashes and nothing happens. This has been frustrating, but I haven't figured out how to solve it.

I started my fall classes, and one of the sites I need for school is a forum where the links open in new windows. To get around this normally, I have been right clicking on the link, going to properties and pasting the web address into my address bar. In the school forum this doesn't work. I just get the main forum page and I am unable to read the messages on the forum. I really need to be able to read these messages, some of my coursework depends on it.

As I said, it only seems to affect links that open in a new browser window and emailed links. Does any one have any ideas? I am desperate now!

Cheers!

Paula

Re: Urgent - problem with links

I'm not an expert, but seeing no one has answered this in a day and you obviously need a solution quick, I have three things you can try:

1. Run Ad-aware and scan your computer for bad programs,
2. Reinstall IE or,
3. Try another browser.

Re: Urgent - problem with links

Thanks for your reply. I have already run adaware, spybot, and my antivirus with no results.

I can't install IE6 because it was a factory installation with WinXP. I wouldn't even know where to start. I have sent an email to Microsoft Tech Support, and posted this question on another board also.

Hopefully others may have more ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Cheers!

Re: Urgent - problem with links

Sounds like you've got 'Error reporting' disabled as well, or you'd be getting "Do you wish to report..." messages.

Try the suggestions here. That'll save me typing it out again!

Re: Urgent - problem with links

Do you have a pop-up blocker? Try turning it off. (Obviously this wouldn't be the case for *all* links, but for any links going to pop-ups/new windows, this is a common problem.)
