booting up-shuts down-first few screens-HELP!

Expand Post »
I have a clone PC using Windows 98. When I try to boot up system, it gets to the first screen and then it just shuts down completely. I can't even get to the safe mode. When I hold down the ctrl key and I choose safe mode. I get a lot of lower case letters starting with (e h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z {|}~ (and then a bunch of lower case symbols)) It prompts me to hit any key to continue. I do and it shuts down. Even if I just let it stay there without hitting a key, it shuts down. I used my anti-virus emergency boot disk to scan entire system of virus', nothing detected. I don't know what to do? Can someone please, PLEASE, help?
