Google Earth errors. Clean Install, won't initialize

Up until recently Google Earth worked fine. Now I get an error when I try to start the program.

"The application failed to initialize properly (oxc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application."

I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Google earth just will not run any more on this computer. Not sure if it is Google Earth or my OS causing the problem.

Win2K, SP4, 3GB Ram and lots of empty hard drive.

I posted this in the Google Forums but I have never had much luck getting help there because I thing Google just put the forum there to make people think they pay attention...but help seldom appears therel

I had this problem until I went to Google Earth on the Start Menu (All Programs) and from the submenu selected "Start Google Earth in Direct X mode". Worked like a charm from then on.

Looks like it requires a 3D capable graphics card or DirectX.
