More svchost.exe problems

When I use either Netscape or IE via Netzero, svchost.exe is never a problem.
However, if I use either Netscape or IE via my university, svchost.exe consumes 100% CPU right away.
If I am just using Microsoft Office before or without accessing the internet, I don't have a problem.
Can any of you listeners help me with this in a step by step fashion or should I chuck Microsoft and buy a Mac?

Thanks.
Now that I know what's running, how do I shorten the list?
