CPU usage is always high

Expand Post »
Hi, over the past week or so I've noticed that my computer is running particularly slow. When I look at my task manager, it shows my cpu usage is always above 40% but at the same time System Idle Process is over 90%. I have no idea what may be causing this. I've run virus scans and spyware sweeps and found a few things but removing them did not fix the problem. Does anyone else have an idea of what I should try. Thanks.

Re: CPU usage is always high

I clicked show all and the numbers for the processes add up to 100 but it still shows the cpu usage is over 40%.

It's possible a malicious program is (imperfectly) hiding itself.

Re: CPU usage is always high

What program should I use to try to find it? I've run Spybot and Malwarebytes as well as Avast! virus scanner.

Re: CPU usage is always high

Where are you seeing this 90% cpu range? Pretty sure it's under your Processes in the task manager, but check out the Performance tab, and it should be fine. The Processes tab, is just showing what's being used the most out of your computer. Say your cpu usage is at 40%? Then the System Idle Process is using 90% of that 40%. Make sense?

If your Cpu Usage is high under the Performance tab, which anti-virus programs you use? Have a firewall other than Windows Firewall? The Cpu usage is more of a Processor issue, but adding more memory can help also. If you posted some stats on your computer, that'd be perfect. Processor, Memory, Hard Drive space, etc.

I think this is the full log now. As far as the 2 hard drives, my C:\ has the OS and programs and I used the F:\ for music and movies and such, but I ran out of room on the C:\ so I started to install programs to the other drive. Is that really bad? Also, the F:\ is a SATA drive, I'm not sure if that matters or not. As for the 2 antivirus programs, I just downloaded avast! because the McAffee one is a free one from my school and it wasn't working very well. I thought I turned it off but I am just going to uninstall it now. The problem occurred prior to installing avast! though. Thanks again.
