error message whe installing a program

when tring to load a program the error message of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. the system file is not sutable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications.
It says on the case it is compattable with Windows XP. I have been tring to load programs like print work shop. i hae also tried 2 other programs that are sort of like that and they won't work either.
Could anyone tell me why?
