Excel files open slowly on shared folder

Hello and sorry for bad English.

I'm having a problem with Windows 2003 server. Clients have Windows XP SP2 installed.
I'm sharing a folder which contains Excel and Word files. If I try to open them from WinXP machine I have to wait like 30-60 seconds before they open.

Recently I have changed permissions to read-only and suddenly documents started to open in 2 seconds. As I give write permission on the shared folder, documents open slowly again.

What can I do to make it go away? Thanks for your help in advance.

If your excel and word files are created with Office 2007 and you open them with Office 2003 it's normal because should make a conversion. Otherwise I don't know what is the problem.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately this is not the issue. All documents are created with Office 2003.
