Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS

when I restart my laptop(windows xp) I get a screen:
"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS"
it happened continuously 4 times when i turned on the computer.
Can anyone help me with this.

You haven't said if the machine actually boots into windows or not. Does it?

yes it boots into windows....and works fine

Run scandisk from within windows and that should stop it.

How to do that.....do i have to take back up before doing it?
