XP machi booting problem

Hi, I am working on a clients machine, original problem was file ext association. I fixed this with driver updates and also ran a registry fix just in case. The files ext now work fine...but 12 hours later the machine boots to a blank desktop (existing desktop background is there) but the start bar and shortcuts etc are missing. The PC will start in safe mode...I have tried numerous restore points without luck.
The client tells me this has happend before, and usually stopped after an extended shut down (she is a little scetchy on details though). This is not the case now, it still wont boot after extended shutdown.
I am considering rolling back the drivers, but this may return the file ext association problems.
Other than that I am thinking maybe a repair/rebuild on the OS.

opinions please

Hi, try downloading and running Dial-a-fix. In the tools section there is a program to restore this problem.
