XP/win 2000 Crashes after installing AOL IM new version - I think its 5.5

Expand Post »
I am pc tech and I am coming across a problem that I am not sure what is causing it and I need some assistance. Between yesterday and today I have had three clients come in with XP & 2000 crashing. Three separate cases. The error message that comes up is either "windows cannot start" or "unbootable volume" The pc does not boot, not even with a boot disk. A check disk worked on one pc, the one with win2000, to fix an error on the hard drive and even though it booted up in normal mode after that, it would not open any files. I had to boot pc in safemode to access files. I asked each client what is the latest thing they downloaded and they all said AOL's latest version of IM. If any one have any similiar experiences and answers please let me know.

Thanks.
