Msconfig Won't Open

Expand Post »
This is pretty wierd. For some reason when I try to open Msconfig through "Run", I get an error message saying that it wasn't able to open it and that I should search for it. When I searched for it, I found several files of Msconfig, and I was able to open it that way. The only major changes that's been made on my PC was I downloaded McAfee a couple days ago. I also ran some virus and ad-aware scans using other programs. Anybody know any suggestions on how to get Msconfig to run without manually going to look for it? Thanks in advance.

Re: Msconfig Won't Open

Having more than one copy is normal, as windows updates may have added newer versions. I would supspect McAfee, and uninstall it, then see if you can get msconfig to run. In my opinion, for what it's worth, I would scrap McAfee, and install AVG Free, which is a more friendly program, and less of a resource hog.

Re: Msconfig Won't Open

well before i posted this message i unistalled McAfee, and I also noticed that I'm not able to run Help and Support anymore. I get an error message saying "Windows cannot find 'helpctr.exe'. Make sure you typed in the name correctly, etc." How do I fix this? Should I do System Restore?

Re: Msconfig Won't Open

It sounds like you may have a virus, or something, unless you have the help service turned off, if this is a winXP operating system. Try Ewido to check for virus and spyware: You can download a trial version of Ewido here: http://www.ewido.net/en/

Be sure you update it before using it, and when it finds a problem, be sure to select the check box to do the same action (clean) when it finds a problem, otherwise, you will have to click continue, to keep scanning with every problem it finds.

I am including a list of free programs that may help you keep the bad stuff off your computer.

I only list here, the programs that I have used and I’m satisfied with, I know there are other great programs, but these are just the ones that I use, and can verify, as being worthy.
