It will be greyed out if no sound card is installed or if the windows audio service is turned off, or if a group policy would prevent you from playing music. It will also be greyed out if the sound card is disabled in device manager or not installed properly.

Got 5 of them, installed each successfully, all working fine per device manager. So, wrong here.

Nope, wrong here again. Turned on.

Explored this per this thread and all other searching about in control panel computermanagement. Perhaps, you have an exact formula to test.

look on my post above. its not just the automatic thing, mine was automatic too. if you look downward it says something like Stopped. Mine was "stopped" so I clicked start and it worked.

I just had the problem and ran across this thread...did the as suggested above and it worked great - mine was in "Automatic" but almost missed resetting the "Stop" command to "Start"...which was the problem and did the trick. It's working great again now !

fixed the problem

OK we got it fixed. The plug and play software emulator had was missing.
Fixed by searching for machine.inf then copy to temp directory. remove
at about line 20 " ExcludeFromSelect=* "

goto control panel, add new hardware, next (let it seach), yes hardware
is connected, next, scroll to bottom, add new hardware device, next,
install from list, next, select system devices, next, select have disk,
point to amended copy of machine.inf in temp directory, scroll to "plug
and play software device emulator" in right hand column, next and
complete install.

None of the above worked for me, however i realised within msinfo32/components/sound device - that there were no devices appearing.

next, my computer properties/device manager/sound video and game controlers. all devices workin properly including my sound device SoundMAX intergrated digital Audio - right click update drivers and problem solved.
