No internet after Windows Update, network still accessible

Hello community.

Recently encountered a difficult problem on my win2000 machine w/ SBC DSL 5100speedstream & Network everywhere router. DHCP, automatic IPs.

I installed some recent windows updates (2 misc win patches, IE patch) and restarted. After reboot, I had no Internet access, but could still access my other machine on network .

After diagnostic attempts with SBC, I found I was unable to complete any pings, could not communicate with the modem, and dhcp IP number settings shown in IPconfig had changed. I suspect some kind of software problem occured with the DHCP server in Windows, but this is relatively unfamiliar territory for me. I've checked all configuration settings I could find.

If you can provide me with any insight and/or need more information, I would greatly appreciate your time!

Thanks for reading; Kevin

This is caused by MS update KB951748 when using ZoneAlarm as a firewall.

Just uninstall KB951748 (Add-Remove programs).
Then get the latest version of ZA that you use:

After you've updated ZA, you can run Windows update again to re-install the same update again.
