no audio device, but hardware is there CD won't play

my PC wouldn't play CDs anymore, (I had malware/tojan horses that I think are cleaned up). So I uninstall the sound divers & re-install using the HP application recovery to reinstall the original drivers, reboot. Then when I put the CD in the drive, the cd won't auto play like before. I turned autoplay for the drive back on - still nothing. the only way I get anything to play is to go to W-media player, select DVD/CD select the drive & then play. If I turn the PC off the drives are gone next time I boot. So I tried UNinstalling, then used recovery to install original drivers, & then went to HP website to get driver updates, install ..and the CD won't play. The only way I get anything to play is uninstall, re-install original drivers, reboot & then play. Today I found the autoplay option for my CD-RW is not there anymore.
Could someone please explain to me what is going on? Windows XP home edition, Realtek AC'97 Audio.
