CD-Rom drive completely missing Plez Help!

I have a computer that my friend brought over...It will not detect the cdrom drive period...It is not listed under device manger or my computer...It has power to it and you can open and close it but it will not run any disk...At start up there is an error that comes up during the boot that says the following:

Atapi cd-rom r/rw 8x4x32-(sm)
Error
02b0: Diskette drive A error.
Press esc to continue or f1 to enter setup

It is a gateway 2000 with windows XP...

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciate!!!!!

PLease check that all data cables are connected tightly. Tis includes the FD cables, HD and OD cables.
