Cannot use usb memory devise on my laptop (windows xp home)

i cannot use properly a usb memory device on my fujitsu-siemens amilo D8830 and i have try almost everything with drivers and bios updates.
Does anyone knows how to fix this problem?

Can you tell exactly which USB devices are giving you trouble, and what exact errors or symptoms you get when trying these devices?

Also tell us which version of Windows you're using, including Service Packs.

I am using Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) and basicly i am having problems with usb flash memory devices, and usb card readers. The problem is that when i plug them in it takes ages to recognise them and some times it doesnt.

Are all your Windows updates installed? Is that a USB 2.0 port on your system? Is the Flash memory device USB 2.0? Does the Flash memory device work on a different system?

Everything is up to date on my laptop and i have all the latest drivers of devices like that but not mine or others of friend of mind don't work on my laptop and all of them work on different machines
