Shell.dll file is reported as missing when quite clearly it's not.

i was round my friends last night surfing the net, when we decided to print something. Unfortunately he had not installed his printer again since re-installing XP pro a month ago.

we tried to install it from the disc provided and a message came up telling us that it could not find shell.dll

I went looking for it and found it in c:\windows\system and shell32.dll in c:\windows\system32.

i logged on here last night and found a similar problem and downloaded a new shell.dll file (renaming and keeping the old one) but that didnt' make a difference

i ran spybot and cleared aload of spyware of, then ran adware and followed up with a virus scan (from AVG) and found a couple of trojan viruses. rebooted and still had the same problem

anyone have any idea what to do next?

My mate is using a 2.5ghz 128mb e-machine running Windows XP pro

cheers
