How to use IRC

I want to speak to people through IRC but I heard it isnt like msn :-/ so i was wondering what is the best IRC client (i hate online ones it always crashes) and how do i get started

How do i use it though once i have donwloaded the software how do i connect to daniweb and talk to other people because you have to use stuff lik /username and i dont understand all that can you give me some examples
