Win2k3 Server - Home Network Setup

Hello there;

I am beginning the setup of my personal home network using Win 2k3 server R2. My question is this: If I wanted to use a domain controller with active directory and file server, do I actually need to have a registered domain name or can I just set up a domain name for the internal network?

I know eventually I will need a registered domain name for when I get my webserver set up sometime in the next 6 months, but for now, can I get away with just creating a "fake" domain name to use at home? if not, what options are available for me to be able to set up a DC to use with my AD and file server?

Thank you for any thoughts concerning this ... "dilemna".....

usually you setup a different domain name for your internal AD driectory like xyz.local if your real name is xyz.com.
