Program update problem

I'm trying to update a few programs and go to the associated web sites through the programs.
The message when I try to update and access the program web site is;
THIS FILE IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH AN APPLICATION.......................... PLEASE CHECK YOUR FILE ASSOCIATIONS WITH WINDOWS EXPLORER.

Hmm, how do I do this? I'm a newbie so go gentle on me.
