Word 2003 Thumbnails

A strange thing happened recently. When I open the window to select a word file, only thumbnails are displayed. When I try to change the thumbnail to list or detail or any other option, only thumbnails are displayed. Word will not allow me to change the file view settings from thumbnails to another option. What is going on? PS: I tried reloading the software and that didn't work either.
