Information about Windows Update

Are there any ways to get the information about windows update ( number of updates, history, status ) by using an application ? That is, to check using a software rather than manually .

Moreover, are there any ways to fake/change those information ? For example, change the status of your windows from 'not up-to-date' to 'updated'.

if you just want to check stuff, maybe there's something interesting in the WMI classes

they're all read-only though, i think it gets the "updated" status from the WSUS server, or microsofts' server
