Samsung a650 faxes on verizon wireless network?

Not sure if this is ok to post here but here goes. I have a samsung a650 with verizon wireless. The number used to be a fax line in my old house. When I moved I had it changed into a cell phone. Every now and then I get a text messages with advertisements. Is it possible that I get faxes on my cell phone? How do I stop this?
