Internet Connection keeps dropping

Expand Post »
Hi, I have a Linksys BFSRX41 router with two computers hooked to it, both running XP home, cable modem. I keep losing internet connection every once in a while, it really sucks when I'm gaming.

I've called the minimuim wage tech sport located over seas about a gazillion times, they keep saying to use the online tool "WRONG" . I believe there's probably a better way to configure it, but thats above me. I also tried port triggering thinking that would help "NOPE" !!!!!!

Please make my life happy again. I'll send you a Christmas card. Really I will.

Re: Internet Connection keeps dropping

Something is wrong with your ISP, Once a week or so is normal.

minimum wage tech support - you get what you pay for. You don't expect bill gates to answer your queries when you are paying $20 a month for internet.

Re: Internet Connection keeps dropping

Some additional information will help greatly.
  • What Operating Systems are you running on the machines?
  • When you lose the connection, does your computer lose the connection to the router or does the router lose the actual internet connection?
  • What do you mean by "every once in a while"? Is it once a day at a specific time, every hour, a few times a day at different times?

Re: Internet Connection keeps dropping

I reconnected the modem so it's coming directly off the first splitter per my ISP. When I'm hooked directly to the modem I never have a drop connection.

-XP Pro on one and XP home on the other.
-The internet signal is solid on the router, but the modem seems to reboot and search for an IP address. I have it configured to search for an IP address automatically. Is that my problem? If so, I dont know how to configure it otherwise.
-It happens randomly, several times a night. Whether I'm gaming or just surfing. When I reboot, the other computer drops connection as well. But the other computer drops connection spontaniously as well.

Re: Internet Connection keeps dropping

Interesting. Let me ask a few more questions and confirm some information.
  • The router's connection to your modem is always good, but your modem will drop the connection from time to time.
  • The dropped connection only happens at night or is this the only time that you notice it? If it always happens at night, it's possible that your ISP is resetting your connection. It is common for an ISP to do this nightly if you don't have a static IP connection. I don't know about multiple times each night, but I wouldn't put it past some of the companies that I've worked with.
  • When one computer reboots, the other computer loses its connection. Does the affected computer lose its network connection completely (you can tell that the connection is lost when a dialog "bubble" will pop up from the system tray to notify you) or just its ability to get to the internet? Does the same thing happen if you reboot the other machine?
  • Are you connecting to the router wirelessly or with cables?
  • I couldn't find your router at first. It's actually a BEFSR41, which is the same router I used to use. It's a nice router, and I'm not familiar with any connection dropping issues. That's not to say that there aren't any.
  • Does your router produce a log? If so, see if you can get some information from the router. Save it as a text file and add it as an attachment with your response.

-True
-I've noticed it at all times day or night, weekday and weekends, I'm pretty convinced it has something to do with the way I have the router configured.
-No the computer is still connected to the network
-Wired
-I dont believe it has a log, I'll check tonight when I'm done with work.

Thank you for your help and time
