Jump to PostYou can use switch or direct cable to connect different PC but one thing you have to give same range of IP address in both PC (eg: PC1:192.168.0.1 & PC2:192.168.0.2). One thing while you use direct cable you have to use crossover cable.

are you talking about a manageable switch like Cisco Switch or just a basic switch? if your talking about manageable switch then you must have the pc's on the same vlan which is by default in vlan 1, while the basic switch will only have one vlan on them, regardless on which your going to use the pc's should be on the same subnet as what ipradip said, or you can buy router for example dlink or linksys brand that have ports on them for your pc to connect on and they have dhcp server on them for ip addressing.
