how can i setup a server

Expand Post »
if i dont have a domain name but have an ftp server like cuteftp how can people download from my server is there an ip adress for it. Do i need to get at least a subdomain.
My main reason for wanting to know this is that i want to share some files over the internet and would need about 10-15 gigs of space so i need a way of sharing them without using torrents or things like magnet links because they dont work very well.

Re: how can i setup a server

Hello,

Assuming your content is legal, you can set up a Linux, a Mac, or a Windows computer to be an FTP or Web server. Mac OS X has it built in, Linux you can install it easily, and if you have Windows Professional, I am sure you can find some freeware or shareware to get the desired functionality.

All the people looking for your stuff will need is an IP number, and to know if they should use FTP or Web applications.

But YOU will need to ensure that the server is secure. Do you want everyone to get to it? Do you need username/passwords? Did you make sure no one can write to your server, so that some schmuck on the internet doesn't fill your server up with child porn, and then calls the cops on you? Having a computer on the internet is a responsibility, ya know.

I do not know what you intend to share, but assuming you are on a cable / dsl link, it is going to take people a while to move something like a CD-ROM through the wire. Off the top of my head, I think I did that one time and it took around 6 hours to move the CD-ROM. ISP's throttle back the "upload" side of things, unless you purchase their business plan package.

read that article, it will help you out greatly. also about no one being able to see it. you have to forward your IP to port :80 so that people can see it. also you need your real IP and not your IP on the network, there is a difference, and one last thing. you will need a program that will fix your IP every now and then because almost no one has a static IP anymore. so if you use your current IP, maybe in a day or so it will have changed so www.blahblahblah.com will no longer work.

Find out you public IP
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...=what+is+my+ip

And point people to that IP. If you have an ftp server running on your system you have it 90% done.

What you need to do, is build a web site page that has a link on it, in that link (use your FTP to upload your file, when you upload it place it in a folder like" http/programs/myfile.xls" (myfile.xls or what ever your extention is, this will be your 10-15 gig file) Then your link will be the file that you have in your data base) Then when they click on it the file will automaticly extract on to there computer. Hope this helps... You will need to purchase a domain name though...
