Burnt laptop connection - what to do?

My sister has come to me with a laptop problem. Apparently, the external power on her laptop has been cutting out quite often, to which she thought it was her external cord. However, after looking at the cord, the end that inserts into the laptop is burnt. It also appears that the inside metal connection pin area is burnt as well. Now I've seen a lot of computer problems, but I don't know what happened here or what we can do with it. Am I going to have to replace something?

I don't think it's overly relevant, but it's a Compaq Presario 2200.

Check the output voltage of your power adapter or try it with another power adapter. Sometimes the problem was caused by a faulty or shorted power adapter.
