Thinking of getting a new monitor

ok i was thinking about upgrading my monitor soon, and was wondering, what are the most important factors when looking for a mid to high-end monitor ? the main purpose in mind being high-end gaming. I would like one that is 22 inches or above, but can you get a really good monitor for that size ? and what are the most important factors when considering a good monitor (resolution, refresh rate, pretty clueless here) thanks for any help
