Black Black Stripes on my CRT Monitor

I have this damn 4 year old Compaq 5500 CRT monitor.
I am getting vertical black stripes all over the screen as soon as I start my PC. What is wrong?
Also the monitor used to go blank all of a sudden and then came back to normal automatically. I ignored it but now it sucks. Can it be fixed at home?
