Sony Vaio to my lcd tv

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-V505CP and i would like to know if i can watch the movies i have downloaded on my laptop on my tv, they both have the same output and i tried to use the lead that went from my PC to the moniter but all i got was a black screen when i put the pc mode on my tv.

Does any one have help for me please.
