ram slots equvalent?

are the two ram slots on my mother board equivalent .I use a single 512 mb ram and i had changed the slots several times .is there any problem doing so?
does any of the slot have a grater preference?

you should always use the one labelled number one if you only have one stick as it can cause problems. having it in either 1 or 2 shouldnt make a noticeable performance difference but on some computers they run a LOT faster if each slot holds identical memory
