RAM issues

I am upgrading the memory in my friends Dell laptop. It uses DDR 2100. It only has one slot for RAM so I took the old out put in the new and made sure it was seated properly. When I turned his laptop on the power light comae on, but nothing else. I tried rebooting several times but nothing. I figured that if the RAM was incorrect or something wrong I would atleast get an error message but there was nothing on the screen. I popped in the old RAM turned on the computer and everything booted up fine. I know I bought the correct RAM, but I have heard that DELL computers only like DELL parts. Any help would be aprreciated.
