Soundcard improves performance?

I have heard many times that having a seperate sound card will take strain off your cpu and improve performance, I know that is somewhat true, but how much strain can it possible take off the cpu?

does it make a noticable change?

On a high powered, modern PC that's a no. The difference would be imperceptible. But on an older PC the difference between onboard audio and a decent add-in sound card can be quite noticeable.
