okay go on dells site here:

http://support.dell.com/

and click "drivers and downloads"

then select your model from the page (or alternatively, type in your service tag, it will be either a black sticker on the pcs case, or it will be in the BIOS - this is a better method especially if you ordered your dell custom built)

I had to do the same for my E510. It uses a nonstandard intel hi-def audio driver but after i looked at dells site like I explained above, i found it in no time.

I signed up for this forum specifically for this one post:

The above response IS accurate, HOWEVER-

*YOU MUST FIRST DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE CHIPSET DRIVERS*

This is also on the E310 driver download page. Remember- Chipset, THEN audio drivers.

I have the exact same problem, I can not get service tag, I need help please. I need sound.

My daughter's e310 has the same problem I reinstalled xp media edition with a dell provided disc and no sound drivers were installed. I Installed the chip set and audio drivers from the Dell sight and still no sound. I have been to the intel site and loaded supposed drivers there also with no resolve of issue. I have spent untold hours trying to find the drivers for the stinking pci device with no luck. I too want to install a sound card, has anyone here have some suggestions? She needs the sound working on her pc for her school projects.
Thanks

You can find the service tag in the BIOS if the sticker is lost

I had this problem for the past 2 months. Dell shipped my system with Windows Media Center preinstalled but only provided me with the Windows XP Professional Install disk. Upon doing a clean install the disk only installs Windows XP Professional 2002. This is pre-SP1 (Service Pack 1)

Double check your system by making sure the MOST CURRENT WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM IS INSTALLED. Do this by START/MY COMPUTER/RIGHT CLICK/PROPERTIES. The system info should appear on a screen. If your copy of Windows is NOT current visit Microsoft @ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx. The installs may take some time to download and update. Refer to this site for additional details on updating your system as it's nearly impossible to find what you need on Dells site or Microsoft's site: http://theeldergeek.com/service_pack_1.htm

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is the order I installed my drivers to assure my system worked correctly:

1. DRIVERS ON DELL SITE DO WORK. They just fail to tell you to UPDATE WINDOWS to the current Service Pack!!! Download all necessary drivers from Dell associated with your service tag number. Do NOT filter your results according to importance. Download all items that say DRIVER. Nothing else at this point.

2. Install chipset - XP Pro install requested the Usbehci.sys driver which can be downloaded for free here http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=123003 (Free Registration)

Restart

3. Install LAN (Available from Dell)

Restart

4. Install PCI_Modem (Available from Dell)

Restart

5. Install Video update (Available from Dell)

Restart

6. Navigate to Microsoft XP updates. Install all security updates. Install SP1/SP2 system update. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx
Follow instructions

7. Install Audio driver

Restart

You should be golden after this.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR SERVICE TAG NUMBER. KEEP ALL YOUR DELL PROVIDED DISKS IN A SAFE AND SECURE PLACE or BURN ALL YOUR NEW DRIVERS YOU DOWNLOADED ONTO A DISK ASAP.

I have come to the conclusion that I hate dealing with the jokers at Microsoft and the fools at Dell. I got nothing but the run-a-round and someone I couldn't understand at Dell. Support your local white box manufacturer or... buy a MAC :-D

on some dells you dont need to use the cd, you can hit control + f11 at bootup to use a recovery partition

I have been unsuccessful getting the PCI drivers thru the Dell site.. My son lost the receovery CD so had to use a base xp install and a few pieces of hardware do not function.. primarily the pci comm driver .. Any ideas how to get the drivers that are on the CD without calling Dell and buying a new cd?

you can get everything from the site

i have a 5150 and i used standard win xp pro cd + thier website

install the chipset drivers first
