Acer Laptop DVD R/W reads and burns CD's but not DVD's

Hi,
My Acer laptop can read CD's and burn them but can't read or burn DVD's. At first it was able to read DVD's but could not burn them now it can't read them also. It's a year and half old. What is the problem and what would be the corrective action?

it could be a lazer problem ,and may need to be replaced ,the lazer can burn cd ,but not be working good enough to burn the dvd ,
